I recently finished The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White and it was absolutely incredible.
I picked it up on vacation in a indie book store, never have hearing of this author or book before.
It’s a young adult queer gothic horror set in London 1883. The book revolves around a fictional society called the Royal Speaker Society, in which people with violet eyes can communicate with spirits.
Silas, the main character is sent to Braxton’s Finishing School for his “Veil Sickness”, which in the book is a disease making women with violet eyes go insane.
I recently finished it and I thought the book was incredible, and the genre of The Spirit Bares Its Teeth was quite out of my genre norm. I would absolutely recommend. It was a 5 star read for me.
A warning though, there are some parts that could be seen as very disturbing, (such as various times of describing ripping a eyeball out of its socket), and also is historically accurate to 1883 with a lot of Transphobia, sexism and ableism.
