    Hello!

I’m planning a vacation to New England, and I’m curious to get a little sense of New England before I got.

Specifically, I will be traveling to Boston, but I would love to read a book about an individual who lives in the general area and goes about their day doing New England things – less about the sort of prep school angle, and more boats and light houses and beaches – and you feel a sense of the area the entire time you’re reading through it.

There are two examples that I have that would be a perfect combination: A Confederacy of Dunces does an excellent job about using New Orleans as a character in the text, and it makes you feel like you’re living in the city, while experiencing all of these crazy characters. The second is The Barbarian Days, which is a memoir about a young man who travels around the world Surfing, and gets caught up in his life, and what happens as he becomes a man.

I know it’s asking a lot, but if there was a book that was a sort of coming of age story about a young person in Boston or New England, where the setting is very important (and it’s good!), id love to know about it.

Thanks all for reading and if you have any options that even closely fit, please send them my way!

ohhh do I have the book for you 🤪

*among other things, I’ve taken up smoking* – aoibheann sweeney. follows a girl’s upbringing on an isolated island in maine. she quite literally takes a boat to the mainland for school every day (there’s also some focus on nyc. but maine is the heart of the story)

I’m from new england myself and have visited maine, and this book really does capture those fishing village vibes
