So, I hear a lot of great things about Blood Meridian on this subreddit. “Can’t put it down”, “dark “, “disturbing”, “brutal” and “vivid”… and when I read the book I clearly see that it’s all these things. That’s why I am drawn to the book and I want more books like that, specifically with a Western theme. However, the book honestly makes me feel like an idiot. Like I read 6 or so chapters trying my best to understand as much as I can without any notes or external resources guiding me along… and then I pull up the Sparknotes page for the book and like there are all these explanations and interpretations for sentences that I just did not catch onto at all when I actually first read them! I feel like I’m reading the book wrong and it doesn’t help that there’s all this language that seems specific to the period in which the book is set which I constantly have to look up. I feel like as someone who has not read a lot of books… I need something less opaque/dense. Also maybe with sentences that aren’t so long-winded and use more commas, lol.
