I just finished The Goldfinch last night & I’m thinking I must have misunderstood something right from the beginning. For the whole book, I was under the impression that Welty told Theo to take the painting & assumed there was some secret meaning behind this that we would find out later but that never happened. Did Welty not tell him to take it? And if not, why did he take it?
