Edited to expand on each book
I got to thinking about books I absolutely loved but cannot read again, either because they were such a long and involved read or just too traumatic.
For me, it would be:
A Little Life – personally very triggering as I have people close to me who had mental health problems including self harm and suicide attempts (not sexual abuse related though). The book was so raw and unflinching in its description of Jude’s struggles
Flowers for Algernon – the main character was arguably better off when he was blissfully unaware of how others perceived him, gaining insight into it did not make him happy. And then, having become so intelligent it all then reversed.
Thirteen Reasons Why – school age bullying is horrific, and it does drive people to suicide. Too close to home in a lot of ways and the suicide itself was just devastating.
Cloud Atlas – loved it but I would compare it climbing Everest, glad I did it but wouldn’t have the will to tackle it again!
What books have you read that you cannot face again?
