Going on a 2 week dive trip to Cozumel and anticipate a lot of down time for beach reading. Nothing on my shelf is speaking to me, and idk exactly what I’m in the mood for. I suppose I’m looking for a “beach read” insofar as it’s compelling and doesn’t have hundreds of pages of exposition, not overly dreary and depressing. I’m open to different subjects and time periods.
**Bonus points if it’s a Mexican or female author, as I was recently made aware of how few books written by women I have on my shelves.

Unreliable narrators
Clever, sardonic humor
Postcolonial literature
International authors (I’m in the US)
Sci-fi (Ted Chiang and Tchaikovsky ftw!)
Some magical realism (a la Rushdie, The Master and Margarita is an all time fav)
Some fantasy (ok mainly just Tolkien)

This may or may not hit what you’re looking for but what about Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It’s set in the mid-twentieth century in the mountains outside Mexico City. It plays with Gothic fiction tropes. While the protagonist knows who she is, she relies on several characters who are unreliable in their communication with her. It’s a quick, fun read.
