I recently read and rather enjoyed Jen Williams’ “The Hungry Dark.” Something about the combination of mystery-solving and folk/geological horror really tickled me. (If anything, I felt the thing wrapped up a bit too tidily. But the character dynamics were mostly strong.) Reminded me a bit of Junji Ito’s stuff – another recent obsession. I’m not in the mood for Lovecraft per se, but have really enjoyed The Fisherman and (one of my all-time faves) House of Leaves. And The Ruins, though that’s less a mystery than the others.
What I guess these all have in common is they’re about places that are bad in a particular inhuman/inexplicable way – and those who are nevertheless (hubristically?) driven to explore them.
So, any suggestions?
