Hi all! For a while now, I’ve been wanting to do a deep dive on religion. Not any one in particular, but more so something that covers the evolution, history, and interconnectedness of the world’s major religions. Written from an academic or historical position, as I’m absolutely not looking to be “convinced” of anything. It’s simply curiosity for curiosity’s sake. Or, you know, so I can be more knowledgeable about this large topic in general.

Anyone have any book recommendations? Bonus points if it’s discussed with humor and/or from an anti-colonization perspective.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

The World’s Religions – Huston Smith

It’s not an encyclopedia, but rather tries to weave together history and the feeling of what it’s like to be a believer of a religion. What it feels like to think you’re God’s chosen people if you’re Jewish, or believe in numerous deities if you’re Hindu. It’s a classic for good reason. I can’t recommend it enough, but make sure to get the original version and not the audiobook with the author reading rambling lecture versions of the same chapters, because his writing is way better than his speaking

You can also check out the Let’s Talk Religion and Religion for Breakfast youtube channels which are better for historical and contemporary info
