I really enjoyed “Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu and “Bears Discover Fire” by Terry Bisson.
I like that they have one fairly realistic thing that’s twisted a bit to make it out of the natural order of things (whatever that is), but really, if you took that element out, it’s still a good story.
I like that in Bears Discover Fire, it leaves a big question of “what’s the point of the bears, anyway?” and that the Paper Menagerie would work without the magical element.
Does anyone have any suggestions of other short stories like this?
If it was written in the last ten years, even better!
Thanks in advance!
