Hello all! This has been posted to two other subreddits because I’m desperate! I really liked this book/series and would love to read again.

I am having extreme difficulty trying to remember this book. The book is definitely like a time traveling/ dimension traveling that starts with the main character or protagonist being female who travels through a portal or veil.

I can’t remember the main character’s name but she must have been like an archaeologist because she was traveling with a tour guide in South or Central America to like Mayan or Aztec runes and that’s when she got transported into another world where she was just in another forest when a bunch of warriors came.

The leader of the camp of warriors was suspicious and didn’t quite like her but thought she was attractive but also dressed inappropriately at the same time. The leader had his second in command keep an eye on her.

During this time the most I can remember is the second command before he died and was buried under a mound of stones gave the protagonist a gold bangle to put on her bicep and in the warriors culture is considered equivalent to being engaged or married.

I know the protagonist in the beginning tries to figure a way back to the modern times of her world but then falls in love with the warrior leader. I also think this might be multiple books in a series but could be wrong.

I read this as a teenager between the years of 2012 – 2016

***EDIT: I was thinking some more and remembered two more pieces of info.

The second in command who she was designated as his ward he was also the leader’s best friend since childhood. The Second in command gave her the bangle as a sign of friendship that the leader mistook and also shared his sleeping mat.

The other piece of info when the second in command died his fellow companions buried him and stacked a mound of rocks over his grave. No one knew (but main character) but the second in command didn’t love the main character but his best friend’s the leader’s sister. After his death it came to light that he didn’t die without an heir because his family were distraught about him being the last of his lineage. But the sister of the leader was pregnant with his baby.

Not sure, but have vague memories of Isabel Allende’s City of Beasts / Eagle and Jaguar series, that overlaps with at least some of this—maybe worth a look?
