I especially loved the different accents, and the accent of the protagonist. I absolutely adore accents in writing! I also loved the plot. A serious, complex topic tackled through the perspective of a child is very interesting. As an example, I’ve gotten the same feeling from His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman.

From the perspective of a 12 year old girl as half of the story …
“Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. A true story recounting using composite characters. But it’s not as wholesome as To Kill a Mockingbird. But the first person child’s perspective is so heartbreaking [in places] and moving and believable as she struggles to protect her younger siblings.
Great audiobook performance of the little girl, Rill. The audiobook uses two narrators to perform the dual first person POVs in different eras, then and today.
This might not be a perfect fit but Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens begins from the prospective of a child who has to make sense of her world- pretty sure some accent usage is there, too!

*Deer Creek Drive* by Beverly Lowry is nonfiction but felt very similar to me.
