I’ve been rereading The Darkest Powers Trilogy that I loved when I was younger and at the same time rewatching Vampire Diaries. It’s made me super nostalgic and though I have a lot of my old favourites in the genre to reread, I’d also like to see if there were any really good ones i’d missed. I’ve been looking online for something good but haven’t found anything that caught my eye or didn’t have awful reviews. I am kinda looking for a shitty romance but not that shitty ya know.

So I’m looking for a YA urban fantasy/paranormal romance type book, particularly the types that were super popular in the early 2000s and 2010s because of twilight. I’d read something beyond this period though. I’m not a fan of insta-love or really smut-heavy books (if they are straight — as a lesbian I just skip right past it cuz gross.) So ideally I’d want to read something slowburn too. (also if anyone has any sapphic slowburn recs for any genre I’d eat that up too).

Here are some books I’ve read that I’m trying to find the same vibe as:

    – The Darkest Powers Trilogy by kelley armstrong (which I genuinely really like and think has aged pretty well)
    – Vampire Academy and Bloodlines by Richelle Mead (this is my all-time favourite series)
    – Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler
    – Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (which I got rid of after rereading because their relationship was so toxic so ideally not something like that)

This one doesn’t fit the exact genre but I feel has the same vibe I’m looking for and I’ll probably reread it next:

    – Atlantia by Ally Condie

And these ones fit the genre but i hated when i was younger:

    – The House of Night Series by P. C. Cast
    – Switched by Amanda Hocking (surprise pregnancy 🤢)

Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m really struggling to find anything that interests me. Or just anything you’d think I would like? I’m just feeling so nostalgic and miss seeing books like those on the shelves and at garage sales. I mean they were literally talking through PictoChat on the DS in The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong!! I miss it so much. Any recommendations would help! Thank you!!

      Hey there!
I think the Mortal Instruments (Shadowhunter) series by Cassandra Clare falls under the catrgory urban fantasy. It was published in 2014 so it’s not really early 2000s, but i personally think that it still has those vibes. And this series has 6 books in total (But also spinoffs that play in the same universe)

It has paranormal elements like vampires and werewolves, but is still not high fantasy or something like that.

I don’t think the book has any lesbian relationships, but through the series a gay relationship develops between two side characters.

I hope this helped! Happy reading 😀
