What books are there that really capture the "playing outside for hours with the neighbourhood kids" experience?
Any that have time spent in woodlands or other natural spaces, or finding abandoned areas, are especially recommended.

An older classic is the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome. It has two sets of children exploring a lake on summer holiday with minimal adult supervision.
