It’s mostly just her typical childhood highs and lows, until the last two pages, which I just hadn’t seen coming.

Her cousin who was taking a year out with the OTC before going to Oxford ends up in the trenches in WW1. I don’t think it was even the part that he died that upset me so much. It’s the two weeks before that, when he came home, terrified, heartbroken and traumatised and knowing he had to go back.
So often the soldiers are shown as just being brave and it’s so easy to forget just how scared and alone these 18 year old kids must have been.
