I just finished reading “Making It So”, the Sir Patrick Stewart memoir, and really, really enjoyed it. I had no idea he had come from such a difficult beginning. I like stories where someone has a harsh background but still creates a successful life for themselves and was wondering if anyone could recommend a similar memoir or biography. By “successful life” I don’t necessarily mean one in the public eye, just a happy life for themselves that overcomes their earlier circumstances, and the story of how they got there, travails and all.
In a similar vein, I’m interested in tales of recovery from traumatic backgrounds and mental illness, along the lines of “The Buddha and the Borderline”. I gather “I’m Glad My Mom Died” is in this category but I haven’t read it yet.
I’m grateful for any recommendations, thanks.
