I would love to see a list of great books set in the desert. Long narrative descriptions of the landscape and of life in this climate helpful. Classic references especially appreciated.
I am a transplant to the desert. I had an idyllic early childhood on the beach in WA state, and miss it terribly. I can appreciate desert’s charms, though, and want to go deeper into my understanding of the character of desert life.
And , yes, I know the face of my father- no need for Dark Tower suggestions.

The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley comes to mind.
Zane Grey set many of his western stories in the Sonoran desert, as did Louis L’Amour. Both included many beautiful descriptions of the land and the people. Both spent a lot of time there, Zane especially. Other Western authors may have as well, but these are the only two I’ve read extensively, so can recommend.
Hmmm, Dune?
A lot of Cormac McCarthy would qualify, especially his Blood Meridian.
