Something which captures the silent anxiety of youth as well as Bret Easton Ellis does.
I’ve already read Catcher in the Rye and I loved it but I’m looking for something darker with more grit… Maybe another book by Ellis? (Besides American Psycho) with a protagonist as equally jaded and listless as Clay, roughly the same age, with similar themes of alienation, loneliness, drug abuse, bisexuality and sexual assault…

The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis
The movie Drugstore Cowboy was based on a book. The Panic in Needle Park, The Basketball Diaries, the Patrick Melrose books.
SE Hinton’s The Outsiders and Rumblefish. They’re geared towards teens but I like them.
Ellis’ newest book The Shards was so good, and definitely dark.
