My brother and I have been trying to get my mom (62F) into reading. She wasn't raised in a household where reading was encouraged and thus didn't read much growing up. She always says she wants to get into books but whenever we get books for her she has trouble focusing her attention on reading them from start to finish. I'm starting to think that we might be getting her books that aren't enthralling/captivating enough for her (my brother and I tend to read more complicated slow-paced stories with flowery language). I'm wondering if anyone can help me out in coming up with some books that she might actually enjoy enough to read in full. To offer some guidance, she really likes listening to true crime videos on YouTube, and she likes TV shows where there's a lot of drama. On the flip side she also likes movies/shows with comedy and wholesome endings. Any ideas you guys can offer would be so appreciated! We would like to find a hobby for her, that isn't just watching YouTube videos, that we can bond with her over.

My go to book rec for people who want to get into reading is Holes by Louis Sachar, because it appeals to all ages, has really short chapters, and is super engaging!

Based on enjoying true crime and lots of drama I would recommend the housemaid series by Freida McFadden. They’re engaging, I finished them quickly and I’d say are considered thrillers

I second *Holes* by Louis Sachar

And I’ll add *The Thursday Murder Club* by Richard Osman and *A Man Called Ove* by Fredrik Backman

If she’d go for urban fantasy with a bit of spice, The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris are super fun and quick-paced

For true crime: *I’ll Be Gone in the Dark* by Michelle McNamara

For cozy and uplifting: *A Man Called Ove* by Fredrik Backman

Sounds like she’d be into fast-paced thrillers! Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn, Alice Feeney, Ruth Ware, etc.
