I want a book where the villain's personality and schemes all come on strong, but are eventually thoroughly and convincingly dismantled. They could just be an immoral douche bag who thinks they're untouchable, or a morally grey extremist that has their ideologies proven definitively wrong. Just whatever can give that kind of thematic catharsis is welcome to me.

Mistborn – The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

There are 3 books in this era of the Mistborn series but the first book alone is excellent and has what you depict.

The Lord Ruler. Has lived 1,000 years and survived burnings, decapitations, etc. they paint the picture pretty quickly.

Steelheart, Soon I will be invincible, and Hench.

In Steelheart, the local Superman is a bit of a authoritarian.

In Soon I will be invincible, the local Superman keeps undermining the protagonist.

In Hench, the local Superman is a bit of an authoritarian.
