Recently read two books which followed people through their life – the first about an orphan going through foster care into adulthood and the second about an 18 year old being in a band and his /the bands life over the years. I really enjoyed both of these and would love some suggestions for more – the longer the better as it really allows me to get invested.
Also if this is a genre of book then if someone could let me know what it is called?

Pachinko
Cutting for Stone
I think “family saga” often covers this.
By the same author as Cutting For Stone, which I also recommend, [Covenant of Water](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/63429926-the-covenant-of-water).
[Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39948633-where-the-crawdads-sing)
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver is a favorite of mine
The genre is called Bildungsroman
[Middlesex](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2187) by Jeffrey Eugenides
[Midnight’s Children](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/705209) by Salman Rushdie
[The Goldfinch](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18655998) by Donna Tartt
[Pachinko](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34051011) by Min Jin Lee
White Oleander by Janet Fitch. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
These both are very very similar to the books you described.
I second some of the ones mentioned here (*Pachinko, Covenant of Water, Demon Copperhead*). Also:
*The Light Pirate* by Lily Dalton-Brooks (not that long though)
*Real Americans* by Rachel Khong
*Hello Beautiful* by Ann Napolitano
*The Dutch House* by Ann Patchett
