Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. There are six books. I think it might hit the spot.

The tapestry series by Henry Neff. First one, The Hound of Rowan, is a bit too Harry Potter-ish for its own good but from book 2 onwards it’s absolutely brilliant. I love the Celtic mythology in it and the world building in general.
