Self help books are my drug. I’ve gained so much wisdom and been inspired to keep on going (despite severe trauma) because of them. I found so many different ways to look at the world and shed that “the whole universe is against me” mindset.

I’ve also learned a lot about socialising (I’m bad at picking up on social cues and understanding people in general) and learned how to come off as actually likeable. I was able to cut off a toxic person who told constant big lies, was chronically passive aggressive and asked me to make serious false accusations about others she was envious of because I learned the red flags of toxic people from a book. I tend to take people at face value and I’m easily manipulated so I’m glad I learned they weren’t good for me.

Someone once implied I shouldn’t like/read self help books that are not presented as scientific. Scientific self help books are good but I completely disagree- people older than me have so much wisdom due to their life experiences and not everything that has some truth to it can be objectively proven. I’ve only ever lived one life and I need to be exposed to as many different viewpoints as possible IMO, taking what resonates and leaving what doesn’t.

Self help books have a kind of bad-ish reputation and I just want to give my 2 cents
