Is Somerset Maugham's "The Verger" in the public domain? Specifically would it be legal to do a recording of it? I know it's part of the Gutenberg Project (https://gutenberg.ca/ebooks/maughamws-completeshortstories02/maughamws-completeshortstories02-00-h.html#theverger), but whenever I try to find a specific reference to the Gutenberg Project being public domain, I get the unhelpful result of " The vast majority of Project Gutenberg eBooks are in the public domain…"

Then I have other references saying if an author has died by 1971, his works are in the public domain (in Canada), which applies.

    1. With the internet being global, being in the public domain in one country isn’t enough if you’re considering making a recording available anywhere outside of Canada. It *should* pass into the public domain next year in the US, which is the most important country (legally speaking) for copyright and public domain.
