Hi, my uncles birthday is coming up and all I have to go on is “ he likes murder mystery” a genre I know little about. Please suggest a book or series. Thank you.
I recently read Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone
by Benjamin Stevenson and really enjoyed it.

I love Rex Stout– the Nero Wolfe books are a lot of fun, and Champagne for One was the first one I read. all the books have the same characters, but you don’t need to read them in order. then again, I’m so partial to American noir mysteries, so I’d find out if he’s more into British ones.

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon was good. Was published in 2013 or so so he might not have read it.
He might also like The Wager. It is a non fiction book but has a lot of intrigue.

Murder mystery is a vast genre with lots of overlap and subgenres. Can you get any more details?
If you really can’t get anything beyond “murder mystery”, Lord Peter Wimsey by Dorothy L. Sayers. I like Murder Must Advertise best of that series, myself.
If your uncle is a Sherlock Holmes fan specifically, you can either get a nicely bound copy of a Holmes book or some Holmes related media. If you know the man has a decent sense of humor a Holmes parody could be a fun gift.
Humor+noir is one of my favorite niche subgenres and my favorite take there is probably The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett. It’s a movie, but there is a novelization.
The Big Over Easy by Jasper Fforde plays with a lot of murder mystery tropes and is a good choice for people who enjoy that kind of humor.

You can get him anthology of all the best mystery short stories for the past year.
I can’t think of the title but it’s something like The Best Mysteries of ____ year. I used to pick it up every year when the library got them in.

Look Closer by David Ellis is great, kept me guessing until the very end!
