Hello everyone, I am having trouble picking up books. Always have. I get turned off by really dark books with unlikable characters because my mental health can't handle a constant state of reading dark stuff. The type of books I am looking for are books like The Harry Potter Series and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. These have very likable characters.

Now I thought of the idea to give my favorite movies that I think I would like a lot if they were books. Based on these movies you could recommend me some amazing books!

    The Harry Potter Series

    The Shawshank Redemption

    Dead Poets Society

    Good Will Hunting

    (500) Days of Summer

    Back to the Future

    School of Rock

    The Queen’s Gambit

If you’re open to YA, I highly recommend The Raven Boys series by Maggie Steifvator

Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Torsz is an urban fantasy / magical realism. There’s nothing super dark about it and I really enjoyed the majority of the characters

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett is one of my absolute favorite books.

A bit off the wall from the movies you cited but you might also enjoy Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn. It’s sort of a spy flick, but it’s very lighthearted and fun. The characters aren’t super deep, but they’re definitely likeable

If you liked Dead Poets Society, I’m willing to bet you’ll also like A Secret History by Donna Tartt

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

I chose these because a lot of the movies you listed are emotionally hard hitting, with great characters and moving stories, which take place in the real world. Both of these books are like that and both are incredible reads. (Being praised by readers and critics alike and selling millions of copies.) They’re the kind of books where you feel a strong connection to the characters and really care about them. They’re also very well written and entertaining to read.

The Shawshank redemption is based on a short story by Stephen king , you can find it on the Different Seasons book. On the same book, you also have The body , whose movie is called Stand by me.

You can also check An abundance of Katherine’s by John Green
