I read a lot of books about history – much of it is so and so conquered this city.
I'm really curious about what that actually looks like from a logistics standpoint. I've read some article and watched some videos, for example, about the process of the Taliban taking power in Afghanistan (the most recent time). Things don't change overnight. They have to decide whether to destroy, to manage, or to leave alone, things like the zoo, the busses, the park, the malls, the nice hotels, the civil service offices, the police.
Or when the Nazis occupied European countries. Much has been written about the military and holocaust, but, how did the Nazis manage the day-to-day operations and local government structures? How did they manage, in a short amount of time – the courts, small businesses, public transportation, etc? Presumably they wouldn't be able to just replace everything and everyone with direct Nazi control immediately.
Really I'm interested in any type of regime takeover, good or evil, whatever, even better would be some book about this dynamic generally with lots of different historical examples.
