This song has been captivating me lately and I’d love a book that invoked the same elements of it. Do you have any favorite books where a character has to move on from their family to better things and it’s a really painful moment for them? I’d love it if it’s more saying goodbye to a found family (maybe some sort of gang?) that they know they’ll never see again. I also love in stories when the father/father figure makes a hard decision because he knows their kid is better than the life they can give them (ex: the Dad in Billy Elliot deciding to scab).

I think that A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews checks these boxes. It gives me the same feelings as the song, anyway
