I’m in the mood for reading a long sweeping epic. I read Shogun earlier this year and loved it. Trying to scratch that itch and can’t decide between these two. What should I read next?

P.s. I will probably get around to reading both at some point. But I’m sure it’ll take me ages to get through each of them, so I’m just looking for the next one at this stage.

    1. Still chipping away at Shogun- I bought the entire series, maybe do some of his others?

I liked the Long Earth series, if you want to try those. Tad Williams books are pretty thorough too.

I’ve not read Lonesome Dove, but Pillars of the Earth and World Without End are brilliant books and are a bit faster paced than Shogun. The Architectural illustrations are a nice addition to the books as well.

Another sweeping epic also by Ken Follet is the Century Trilogy that looks at key events from different points of view across the 20 century. Starting with the build up to WW1 and finishing with the fall of the Berlin Wall

I own all the books you mentioned, but I haven’t finished any of them. So, grain of salt…

Personally, Pillars of Earth is the top of my list, though Shogun is close behind. I started Lonesome Dove but kinda lost interest. I guess it’s all about what historical period you want as a setting, and I’m into Middle Ages England more than the others.

If you want another big epic historical fiction to add to your list, I’m working on Peter Matthiessen’s “Shadow Country” and I’m enjoying it so far. Early 1900s Florida Everglades and its pioneers and outlaws.
