Yesterday I read The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow and, while the writing was great, it was one of the most uninteresting stories I’ve read. This is my experience with most of the horror booms from that time.
Stuff like Carmillia, Dracula, Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe, The King in Yellow and The Yellow Wallpaper had me on the edge of my seat while stuff like The Picture of Dorian Gray, Jekyll and Hyde and The Vampyre felt overindulgent in their prose without providing a reason for me to keep reading.
I want something that is the perfect middle ground between the two.
