Books where people are trying to survive some insane disaster (such as alien invasion), similar to the movie, Monsters, or The Road but maybe a bit more action

I'm looking for something a little exciting about 1 person or more trying to survive an insane disaster. I say insane because I'm looking for something that isn't common or mundane.

I guess this would be a "shit hits the fan" kind of situation.

Spielberg's War of the Worlds would also fit what I'm looking for.
