The first thing that caught my eye was the stunning retro-tech, pastel-colored [UK cove](https://rebellionpublishing.com/revealing-the-uk-cover-for-mickey7-by-edward-ashton/)r. And the compact, slightly small printed volume fitting well in the hand. And of course the alien planet-clone story.
Then I realized that the main plot and the background world are pretty much a mix of the movie [Moon](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/) and the Richard Morgan books. And that’s it! Apart from these, there are no new ideas in the text, we have even seen those enemy aliens in countless other movies and novels. The development of the main character is also quite flat, by the end of the novel he is almost at the same place as at the beginning. The characters are dry, not connectable. The description of the background world is particularly boring, barely connected to the main plot.
I know that so many works have already been published that it is almost impossible to create a completely independent one. But at least the tone, the personal connection, the psyche of the characters or the mix of adopted motifs could offer something unique. Well, I didn’t feel any of that in this book. I spun it fast all the way through, I’ll take it back to the library, let someone else suffer with it. It is not worth the price of a new paperback, not even as a gift.
With a little research, we can read that the film version has already been shot, but due to the postponement of Dune 2, its release was also postponed. Even though it will have Robert Pattison and Mark Ruffalo, I’m going to start it as background noise on the TV to my house chores, and I’m not going to buy the sequel to the book either. There are so many much, much better books out there!
