I came across some photos of immigrants taken by Augustus F. Sherman in the 1906-1914 and he seemed to capture people coming mostly from rural areas of Europe. One picture in particular was of a slovak woman and her children, a toddler and a new born. And I couldn’t stop thinking about her struggles, the children slowly forgetting their native language and home country, if the they kept in touch with their relatives, if they got scared of the big city and so forth.
