I want to get into fantasy books but I can't for the life of me because of how picky of a reader I am. If the problem isn't the world, it's the characters or writing, or vice-versa.
I dislike high fantasy because of how overwhelming it is. I'm looking for something closer to "grounded" or "realistic" fantasy if that's even a thing. A few fantastical beasts is fine, but no chosen one, spirits, or magic (maybe a little magic is fine).
I don't need the characters to speak super fancy or there be multiple plot lines. I just want a simple and enjoyable read that isn't written like im reading a checklist (as much as I liked GoT, the first book felt like that).
