Asking because I am German and I don't know if it's because my literature teacher probably wore a black top hat and flew around on a broom in her free time, or maybe I struggle to enjoy prose written in old versions of my mother tongue, but I have get to find a German classic that I didn't read only out of necessity and could actually enjoy. Even Rilkes poetry has no effect on me since we analysed it to death in school and Faust is the only book I ever DNF'ed.
So, I'm gonna need an outsiders perspective for this, in the hopes that my older age has made me less resentful of Goethe, Schiller and Co.: are there any must-reads or books that you personally find great, beautifully written or just important?
