Recs for books similar to lord of the rings series/studio Ghibli movies

In terms of books, I loved: the Rosie project series, gone girl, to kill a mockingbird, the great Gatsby. Absolutely hated 1984, and got halfway through the picture of Dorian Gray but can't seem to finish it. As a child I loved anything by Enid Blyton. I am a huge fan of the studio Ghibli movies and would like to read something similar to these (was recommended Norwegian wood which I have just started and am unsure about so far). Also loved the lord of the ring movies but haven't read the books yet. I also liked in the Rosie project the aspect of genetics/medicine/etc as I am studying to be in the medical field.
