I’m not sure the exact name of the genre, but I’m looking for science fiction with a grander mystery to it. (not murder mystery) Think giant monolith popped up in the middle of town and nobody can figure out what it is. Or the TV show Lost with a mysterious island (just a better ending).

Your sample description literally describes the plot of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green. It’s great even though it’s technically a YA novel.
