Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz was such a book for me. I'm typically not a fan of his writing, but when I found this title for $2 at a local used bookstore I bought it—and am so glad that I did. Odd turned out to be one of the most original, smart. quirky, and likable protagonists that I've read in quite some time. As such, I'm looking for other recos re: novels that you loved but didn't think you would. Any genre is fine.

    1. Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson I fell in love with pretty easily. It was labeled as being more cozy and a cute story which is a far cry from my usual grim and dour stuff. And you know what? It actually is kinda cute and cozy but so well done that I stepped outside my box and loved it anyways. It’s an accessible read for all sorts of people and I have no issues recommending it to strangers.
