Given how complex and challenging marriage and parenthood can be, I've been enjoying adult novels that remind me of the magic and beauty of domestic life, broadly defined. I know there are a lot of family-centric children's books with a cosy, feel-good vibe, but I've found it harder to track down novels for adults with the same happy/heartwarming/inspiring feel. Listed below are some of my favourite adult novels that push me to be kinder to/more grateful for family:

Liane Moriarty's What Alice Forgot: Alice wakes up with memory loss after an accident that makes her forget the last 10 years of her life, and she's shocked that she's now divorcing the husband that her younger self cherished and adored, and she's disconnected from the sister who used to be her best friend. Oh, and she also has 3 kids and doesn't even remember being pregnant! Alice now wants to rebuild everything she's lost. This book is a treasure – in a quietly beautiful way. Every page makes me more motivated to carve out more mindful and appreciative moments in the rush and bustle of everyday life.

Louisa May Alcott's Little Women – Maybe the most well-known story of sisterhood ever? I love the sequel to the first Little Women, which is more explicitly for adults – where the women navigate being young wives/moms/adult daughters and sisters. Some out-of-date beliefs, for sure, but also some incredibly emotionally rich arcs.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Ingleside: Everyone knows Anne of Green Gables, but what about this hidden gem? I LOVE how Anne navigates the challenges and joys of motherhood. She's mature, but still whimsical, and she nurtures her children's imagination. The whole book is filled with warmth, humor, and keen appreciation of the trials and triumphs of being in a big family. I did read one hilarious book review about it book will lull you into immediately wanting to have 8-10 kids, though – be warned 😂

These are some of my favourite "feel-good" and cosy adult novels with family and domesticity at their heart.
