War, politics and jiujitsu collide. Check out our new book and support our team. "Bow Before No Man" on Amazon
Wow! From no gym, no mats, no gis, no training, no coaches… to fierce male and female competitors representing Ethiopia against world fighters? I hope this book becomes a movie! It is exciting, informative, entertaining, sometimes heart wrenching, and so well-written… so many feels! I know nothing about Brazilian or any other kind of jiu jitsu, but that did not keep me from staying up late and binging the entire book on the same day I picked it up. From the first pages, I was sucked in to exploring life in Ethiopia from an ex-pat/immigrant’s perspective. Colin’s storytelling had me laughing out loud at parts and nostalgic for the challenges and joys of being a foreigner befriending locals. The alternating voices were such a cool way to tell the story. My fave part was reading about how passionate minds develop and pursue their obsessions with a sport or art form, from the a-ha revelation that they need BJJ in their life to the toughness they showed on each of their unique journeys. The stories shared by Colin and the athletes in their own voice are incredibly inspiring. (I hope Coke’s dream comes true — this book should become a movie that she makes with Tyler Perry!) Thank you to everyone for sharing your perspectives with such openness, and congratulations on all you’ve accomplished!
