    1. Opus-the-Penguin on

*A Prayer for Owen Meany* – John Irving

*The Name of the Rose* – Umberto Eco. (Someone else recommended his *Foucault’s Pendulum*, which is also fantastic. It makes a good philosophical sequel to *Name of the Rose*.

    2. They don’t get any bigger than Marcel Proust’s *In Search of Lost Time.* You too can eavesdrop on the rich and the raunchy of Belle Epoque France.

    3. Stephen King- IT, The Stand, Needful Things, Insomnia, The Tommyknockers, The Talisman, Black House, 11/22/63

The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova. There’s a book within this book. Bonus points if you like intense descriptions of Eastern European towns!!!

    5. How about epic fantasy? The Wheel of Time series. 14 books, most about 1000 pages apiece.
