Technically, “The Hunger Games” started as a reimagining of the ancient Greek myth of Theseus, from the collection of tributes to their fight to the death in an arena while being watched by an audience entertained by their deaths by bull (the Minotaur). If you have any desire to work backwards, a great book about Theseus and the bull dances on Crete is {{ The King Must Die by Mary Renault }}.
It might be interesting to see what other reimaginings are out there. I might have to do a bit of research…
