I have been reading chapter books to my daughter for the past 6 months. She is almost 4 and she cannot read herself.
So far, we have read:
Charlie and the chocolate factory – read twice, she loves it!
Charlie and the great glass elevator- we finished it but what a weird story (oddly political and goes in a bizarre direction at the end)
The witches – read twice, her favorite!
Matilda – finished it but it was a bit too hard. Too British in the language and used some unusual phrasing and vocabulary that she wasn’t as engaged with. Also, the story was a bit too “boring” (her word).
Mary poppins – she loved the movie but the book was too difficult. Did not finish.
So what I am looking for:
– some kind of fantasy element she seems to enjoy. An exciting and engaging story
– a chapter book
– similar reading level/vocabulary to “the witches”
– the occasional picture would be a bonus but not necessary.
Thank you for your help!
