Looking for a book series to gift young teenagers. They're sisters and pretty conservative and have read just about everything I can think of. Looking for minimal to no romance. I think Cassandra Clare is completely out of the question. They have read The Reckoners, Mistborn, all of Rick Riordan's stuff, Wings of Fire, Warriors. Basically everything at the library.
Their tastes run to fantasy and sci-fi, some historic fiction. I'm usually checking out what they're reading, rather than the other way around. Hard times are expected for the family over the next few months, and I'd like to put together a care package with a trilogy or better for entertainment. Help me get off the beaten path!

Maybe the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman? You could also gift some of the Discworld books by Terri Pratchett.
