The Adrian Mole books by Sue Townsend. They’re hilarious. The series start when he’s a teenager and follows him through fatherhood.

Netherland by Joseph O’Neill.
There was one aspect of this book that felt dated and slightly bad (the protagonist’s OBSESSION with being the only white guy on the cricket team), but otherwise it was an exquisite read.
