i recently read "china road" by rob gifford and loved the way it combined historical exposition with personal experience, observations, and vivid descriptions of the chinese landscape.
suggest me books like this but about different parts of the world

Paul Theroux has a number of books, like this often with train journeys- Dark Star Safari in Africa, Patagonia Express in South America, Riding the Iron Rooster in China, There are also Russia and UK ones.
Bill Bryson has some for Britain and The U.S.
