I recently finished Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jędrowski and it's put me down a major rabbit hole about Poland. I want to learn more about why the main character couldn't just go visit his grandma, why his friend took a job she didn't like because the alternative was being forced back to her small village, why it was so difficult to get a passport. I honestly don't know that much about the Soviet Union but this might be the catalyst for me. Does anyone have any suggestions for sociological books about Poland during this time period?
