I'm really intrigued by those places in the states that seem to get a little forgotten, at least to a non US citizen lkke me. I'd love some literature that shows me the melancholy of Minneapolis, or the down and outness of downtown Cleveland, or what the hell happens in Milwaukee.
Any suggestions?

I’m probably not the best person to recommend as that’s not my genre, but one book leapt to mind:

The book is set in Iowa and is very evocative of place. Kinsella is Canadian so I don’t know if he captured Iowa but he definitely captured Alberta, where both the author and I are from.
American Rust by Philipp Meyer, 2009. Takes place in a fictional town in Pennsylvania. It’s an excellent (fiction) book, but very dark. Looks at the decline of manufacturing and the economy of the area through its characters.
