Book about a hopeless classical pianist/composer?

I would like to read a book—NOT a biography but a novel—about a classical pianist or overall music composer that starts off with big ambitions but fails in life, losing all the hope.

Any good suggestions? Would be interesting if it went into deeper themes as well such as the psychology of the misery that the musician goes through.
