For me, the moment in the book Holes where all he hears is the thump thump thump of the empty canteen as he runs away into the dessert. I think about those last sentences a lot and I’ve only read the book once!
I think it was the evolution of the sentence, the onomatopoeia, had me on curious as to what the thump was, the reveal and then the stakes. It just lives rent free in my head.
