Hi all!
I’m looking for a good book recommendation, something that’ll grip me and I won’t be able to put down.
I’ve recently started using audible which is great for when I’m driving and stuff, but I want something to read. Lately I’ve not been able to connect to anything on my kindle for some reason, so I might just buy some paperbacks instead (some examples would be LOTR, GOT that I found are difficult to read on kindle but might be good in paperback).
I’m quite a noob reader so open to suggestions on any genre basically, but I’m usually more drawn to fantasy or light sci-fi (not a very big fan of space/aliens etc.). I just want to be gripped!
Things I’ve read/listened to on audible and loved, to further emphasize my noobiness:
Harry Potter (all)
Percy Jackson (all first series)
Andy Weir – Project Hail Mary
Stephen King – 11.22.63
1984
Currently listening to Pet Semetary since I seem to have liked Stephen Kings writing and audible is available.
I’ve read other books of course which were good, but these were the ones I absolutely loved.
Any recommendations will be welcome.
Thanks! 🙂

A deadly education and sequels
Hello!
Have you read any works by VE Schwab? She writes light fantasy/sci fi very well. Her stories are more about the character than the world and she does morally gray characters very well.
*The Darker Shade of Magic* is book one of a trilogy and it’s about an adopted prince who can travel between four multiverse of London. He’s also a smuggler and has to partner up with like a wannabe pirate lady to save his kingdom. The audio book is pretty good though the male narrator tends to talk in the that higher pitched “feminine” voice with a mixed results.
*Vicious* (also by Schwab) is a sci fi book that takes place in a world where people can gain super power based on their near death experience. Two best friends become super heroes and become mortal enemies (like Magento vs Professor Xavier).
I also like T Kingfisher books. She does a great job of handling darker plot themes with levity and humor. And, I don’t know how old you are but her protagonists tend to be in their 30s and average, but average in like a refreshing good way.
I recently finished *A House with Good Bones* which is about a 30 some year old who stays with her mom. It’s like cozy horror (think dark magic) and the audio narrator was great. The audio book was great and the narrator was very fun to listen to.
I also really liked *Nettle and Bones* (also by Kingfisher) which is about a 30 some year old princess who has to save her older sister from her sister’s abusive husband. Kingfisher does a great job of respecting the severity of the situation while not being too heavy or dark.
If you like the magical school theme of HP and Percy, I highly recommend *In Other Lands* by Sarah Rees Brennan. It’s a fun subversion of the magical school and the hero’s journey told through the prospective of the side kick. Each part of the book is one year in the propagandist’s life and it starts when he’s 11. So, at first the book feels very young but as he ages up, so does the writing and the plot. You might also like the Simon Snow trilogy by Rainbow Rowell, which is basically HP fan fic. *Carry On*, the first book in the series, is very HP fan fic vibe. It can be a bit disorienting at first because it can feel like you’re reading book 7 of a series since it references things from the past like you’re already supposed to know about them, but if you can get over that, it’s a fun series.
the monstrumologist series by rick yancey. peak.
